Driving is an exciting time in every teen's life, almost a rite of passage into adulthood, bringing with it greater independence but also greater risks. In fact, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) ranks car accidents as the #1 killer of teens, greater than suicide and homicide.
Teenagers drive less than all but the oldest people, but teen's crash and crash deaths are disproportionately high. The fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16-17 year-olds is about 3 times the rate for drivers 20 and older.
